Spend May in Indianapolis with concerts, great food and a day at the races.
The Indianapolis 500 is a staple of springtime in Indiana, taking place on the Sunday of every Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30, 2011). A weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May is always a great idea and there is so much more to do than cheer on your favorite driver.
Qualify for a good time
Roll into Indianapolis the Friday before the race to make it a complete weekend. Take in a practice round to get an early look at the competition. Stick around through the afternoon for additional pre-race events.
After a long day of quailfying rounds, head downtown Indianapolis for dinner at the historic St. Elmo’s Steakhouse . Try their famous shrimp cocktail before sinking your teeth into a delicious, juicy steak. After a day of excitement, let your head hit the pillow at the luxurious Conrad in the heart of downtown.
Sleep in and catch the annual 500 Festival Parade downtown at noon. The parade showcases the Indy 500 drivers, national celebrities, music, floats and your favorite TV & Movie stars. Afterwards, enjoy gourmet Asian fare at P.F. Chang’s China Bistro .
Start your engines
Wake up early and head to the track for the Spectacle of Bands and 500 Festival Princess Lap. Listen to the legendary pre-race performance of “On the Banks of the Wabash” and hear the engines roar to a start. Then hover on the edge of your seat while the drivers battle through 200 heart-pounding laps to the finish line.
