About this trip idea
How does this sound: 90 holes of picturesque, challenging golf within about 60 miles? Then, make a line drive to Eastern Indiana to play five of the State’s premiere courses.
A designer’s dream in Wabash
Named by the Indianapolis Star as one of Indiana’s Top 10 public courses, Honeywell Golf Course was designed by international architect Arthur Hills. Honeywell’s trademark is its speed greens. Expect longer and wide-open holes on the front nine. Conditions get very challenging, short and tight on the back nine as you wind through picturesque old gardens. You’ll also play the only back-to-back par 3 in the state.
Overnight at Charley Creek Inn in downtown Wabash. This 1920-vintage hotel has been recently restored to its original warmth and elegance. Check out Cloud Club on the new fifth floor – it’s a roof garden with glassed-in pavilion.
One location - 36 holes - WOW!
Play 36 holes at Walnut Creek and Club Run Golf Complex in Marion , given a Golf Digest 4 Star Rating. Bring your strength for Walnut Creek’s long tees and large greens – No. 11 is the longest at 620 yards. Club Run is the shorter course, but shot-making ability is crucial because of hills, woods and water. This complex promises reasonable green fees with a friendly welcome.
For a fun treat, try Ivanhoe’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Shoppe in nearby Upland. This drive-in mainstay is famous for its 100 different shakes and 100 different sundaes selection.
Hit the links Hamilton County style
Indiana’s longest course, measuring 7,770 yards from the back tees and 4,562 from the front, is Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville. Aim carefully, because Purgatory’s defining feature is its bunkers – 125 of them! From tee to green it’s covered with bent grass, while tall fescue grasses offer contrast, beauty and challenge. Nearby in Cicero, you’ll find out why Bear Slide Golf Club has won many accolades: Golf Digest 4½ Star Rating, Golf Week ranked #8 Best Public Course in Indiana, and it’s in the Top 75 Most-Affordable course in the U.S. Enjoy the variation of Scottish links on the front nine and traditional style on the back.
Between rounds, relax in the indoor pool or hot tub at the Noblesville Cambria Suites
